Right, after lots of swearing, smut and toilet humour, down to some actual techy stuff. lol

I got a customer right, she has a web site http://www.goldviewestates.com and she wants update her site, ('cause it's weeeely weeeely bad), so i go and have a look, and say 'yea, no probs, just give us the u/n p/w and ftp info', cool right? NO! the guy who designed her site also hosts it, and he's not giving her or me the ftp details u/n & p/w !!!!!! wtf?

Here's his site, (my mum could do better) http://www.sellorseek.com

Do we have a case? I would suggest moving server, but she's just renewed another years subscription. Do we have a legal case or not? I dunno. Personally, I think that the customer owns the site including the ftp details, ('cause she rents the space on the server).

Any suggestions from our techy friends??
I'd guess that you have grounds, but not too sure how Spanish laws work.....
Hmmm

I would agree that the customer owns the site content, but not the site itself.

She would own the Domain, and she would have every right to reclaim the any source, and host it elsewhere.

I don't think she would have an right to FTP details per sè - There might not even be an FTP server. I personally wouldn't provide one if I was a hosting provider - its insecure.

If the person is hosting the site on his space on a server, he may not have the ability to create an account, or create one that would allow her access to her( and only her ) webspace.

In the absence of any other method, the site should be updatable within a reasonable timeframe, by providing the host with an archive of what you want to be on the site.

Shows the domain is reg'd to Olga of goldview - if that is your client then she can do whatever she likes with it (move to new host and have the DNS servers changed at the domain registry).

Also you could scrape the site forcibly with blackwidow or something similar (wont do any dbs tho, just content) then run it on a localhost and see what the damage is.

If there is a db then youll need to gather the data manually (or script in badboy etc to get it all bu going through every page and recording the output) - then at least if he still refuses you can tell hime to shove it, move the hosting, switch the dns and re-upload.

(or u could go and gime him a SLAP!) Wink
